Welcome back to another episode of Black Girlfriend. | 0:22 | speaker 1
I'm yo girl. | 0:25 | speaker 1
Tenish. | 0:26 | speaker 1
Nicole. | 0:26 | speaker 1
And I'm Tashanda Dixon. | 0:27 | speaker 2
today we're going to do something a little different, y'all. | 0:29 | speaker 1
We're going to talk about some stuff that's been in the news. | 0:32 | speaker 1
This is a little weird topic for. | 0:38 | speaker 1
Us because we do not keep up with the news. | 0:39 | speaker 2
I just want to put it I. | 0:42 | speaker 2
Really know what's going on in the world at any given moment, unless it has to do with money. | 0:43 | speaker 1
That's pretty much what you know about. | 0:50 | speaker 1
Well, I just feel like just to speak on that, though, I was to a point. | 0:53 | speaker 2
For me, it really started off in copit that it was just so much negativity. | 0:58 | speaker 2
I tried to watch news because I felt like I needed to know what was going on. | 1:03 | speaker 2
And it was just negative, negative. | 1:06 | speaker 2
So much. | 1:09 | speaker 1
So I was kind of depressed. | 1:10 | speaker 2
I was like, Why do I feel like this? | 1:12 | speaker 2
I realized that it was like all that negative information all the time coming at you, and then not to mention, like, I feel like when I was growing up, we only had TV and so you could turn the TV off, but now you get alerts to your phone. | 1:15 | speaker 2
You're scrolling, like social media. | 1:30 | speaker 2
It's there. | 1:33 | speaker 2
I mean, it's in everyone's conversation. | 1:34 | speaker 2
I just had to shut out usually. | 1:37 | speaker 2
I'm saying this to say is, I've been shut out for like, longer than that, but really I was like, no more during the whole COVID time frame. | 1:39 | speaker 2
I dig it. | 1:50 | speaker 1
Yeah. | 1:51 | speaker 1
I've never been like, a big TV person at all, but I did own a TV one time in my life. | 1:53 | speaker 1
Okay. | 2:01 | speaker 2
during that time, one of the channels that I will watch was CNN all the time. | 2:02 | speaker 1
Really? | 2:07 | speaker 2
You were in the CNN? | 2:08 | speaker 2
I always love CNN. | 2:09 | speaker 1
Anderson Cooper, I feel like you wanted to date him. | 2:12 | speaker 2
Not that you were really interested in what he had to say, but okay. | 2:16 | speaker 2
It was a program that was always on in college, you would go to the food court and CNN was always on. | 2:20 | speaker 1
It was just kind of the thing. | 2:28 | speaker 1
She went to school, y'all, were in DC. | 2:31 | speaker 2
But yeah. | 2:38 | speaker 1
I got my TV, I was like, this is one of the channels that I watched with some regularity and that was in 2017. | 2:38 | speaker 1
that was also the same year I stopped watching news. | 2:49 | speaker 1
Okay. | 2:54 | speaker 2
From then on, I've pretty much been under a rock, and I get my news from work meetings. | 2:56 | speaker 1
I thought that was a long no. | 3:04 | speaker 2
I'm like Googling, by the way, being like, oh, did you see this? | 3:07 | speaker 2
I'm like, I don't want to check what's going on. | 3:09 | speaker 2
I get it from that, and I get it from Instagram. | 3:12 | speaker 1
Instagram? | 3:16 | speaker 1
How does Instagram people do videos on the news? | 3:16 | speaker 2
I don't follow any news channels. | 3:21 | speaker 1
I do follow line. | 3:23 | speaker 1
Easy for you all who know her she talks about like, current events, particularly impacting black people and impacting what's the name? | 3:25 | speaker 1
Give her a shout out. | 3:34 | speaker 2
I think she just changed her name now. | 3:35 | speaker 1
She got her blue check. | 3:37 | speaker 1
That's interesting. | 3:39 | speaker 2
Why would you change your name if. | 3:40 | speaker 2
You get the blue check? | 3:41 | speaker 1
But okay. | 3:42 | speaker 1
Actually changes to her real name. | 3:43 | speaker 1
Okay. | 3:45 | speaker 2
But she only comes out every Friday. | 3:46 | speaker 1
It's called parking lot pimpin. | 3:49 | speaker 1
Parking lot pimping. | 3:53 | speaker 1
Black news sources. | 3:55 | speaker 1
Okay. | 3:56 | speaker 2
she also talks about history and all this stuff and then other stuff like that. | 3:57 | speaker 1
The culture just picks up. | 4:02 | speaker 1
the death of Shankuela, I forgot her last name, but social media picked that up. | 4:04 | speaker 1
I heard about it through there and I was following it through that. | 4:10 | speaker 1
it's not all news that gets picked up by the culture. | 4:13 | speaker 1
It's just like certain news. | 4:17 | speaker 1
so that's the main stuff I get. | 4:19 | speaker 1
when people talk about work or even church will talk about a shooting or something that has happened. | 4:21 | speaker 1
When is that adult? | 4:28 | speaker 1
I was like, what I like, though? | 4:30 | speaker 2
Trevor Noah. | 4:33 | speaker 2
Trevor Noah this is how I get my news now. | 4:34 | speaker 2
I don't even watch I watch the clips on YouTube. | 4:38 | speaker 2
Trevor Noah for a long time, I didn't know if what they were saying was true because it was comfortable. | 4:42 | speaker 1
that's what I had to do, though. | 4:51 | speaker 2
I told you, like, I had to come out of this COVID news and find a good way to consume news. | 4:52 | speaker 2
And he is hilarious to me. | 4:56 | speaker 2
Yeah, that's how I follow what's going on with Trump. | 5:00 | speaker 2
The Daily Show. | 5:04 | speaker 1
He announced his I'm so leaving. | 5:06 | speaker 1
September 2022. | 5:11 | speaker 1
I am so sad. | 5:14 | speaker 1
I'm sad. | 5:15 | speaker 1
I'm sad, too. | 5:16 | speaker 1
his last day on air was December 2022. | 5:17 | speaker 1
I'm just like, I think so everyone was shocked because he actually didn't tell anybody until it was live. | 5:20 | speaker 1
Even his bosses didn't know until he told them and everyone on air. | 5:32 | speaker 1
yeah, I mean, what he said, though, I just heard about this and so I did a lot of research and things, and apparently he said that he'd been on there for seven years and he made his announcement. | 5:40 | speaker 1
Seven years in one day he was leaving. | 5:54 | speaker 1
he just said that he wanted more flexibility to be able to travel and do more stand up, which is really what he loves. | 5:57 | speaker 1
you can imagine being on a Daily Show where you have to be now in a studio. | 6:06 | speaker 1
during COVID was at his house Monday through Friday, and he talked about all the work that goes into his role and how he did not realize that's what he was signing up for. | 6:12 | speaker 1
Well, I mean, that was really his start, right? | 6:27 | speaker 2
Mostly before he got there, he was in stand up. | 6:30 | speaker 2
Like that was his thing. | 6:32 | speaker 2
so this is a whole new atmosphere. | 6:33 | speaker 2
by the way, it was a phenomenal opportunity for him. | 6:36 | speaker 2
His stock just went up like crazy. | 6:39 | speaker 2
Right. | 6:42 | speaker 2
so, yes, if I'm him, I would have taken it seven years ago, too. | 6:43 | speaker 2
Yeah, but now he has a really strong brand, and he can go and do literally anything. | 6:46 | speaker 1
Yeah. | 6:55 | speaker 2
that's cool, but I think that we kind of forget about celebrities in that way that, like, all the other hosts that do these late night shows, they retire out of it. | 6:55 | speaker 2
Right. | 7:06 | speaker 2
They're like, we're going to stay here forever. | 7:07 | speaker 2
that's not necessarily who they are or who they wanted to do. | 7:09 | speaker 2
It could have been a great opportunity. | 7:13 | speaker 2
It could have been something else. | 7:14 | speaker 2
But I say more power to them. | 7:15 | speaker 2
I think it's more of what were talking about before. | 7:18 | speaker 2
It's you deciding to live your life, to be who you want to be, to spend that time enjoying the things that you enjoy and not really living for everybody else. | 7:20 | speaker 2
I'm going to miss them, but I know I'm proud of them. | 7:31 | speaker 2
it's like, who the heck is going to replace him? | 7:35 | speaker 1
We don't know. | 7:38 | speaker 1
Yeah. | 7:39 | speaker 2
No, I'm sad because I'm really thinking about, like I think that was a great example to people about choosing to do you. | 7:39 | speaker 2
Yeah. | 7:48 | speaker 1
I really appreciate I appreciated his journey and even the ways that The Daily Show has changed because he was there, the variety of the segments. | 7:48 | speaker 1
Some people were given opportunities that would have never gotten an opportunity. | 8:03 | speaker 1
I completely agree with that. | 8:08 | speaker 2
And now they have something. | 8:09 | speaker 1
Right. | 8:11 | speaker 1
They have a career because of this guy. | 8:11 | speaker 1
And so I think that's so beautiful. | 8:14 | speaker 1
I think the network took a huge risk in taking him on because I remember when he first came on and like, they were hemorrhaging watchers, because even though it's always been a very liberal show, but he took it. | 8:16 | speaker 1
It wasn't a black person on this show, and that has its own ramifications. | 8:40 | speaker 1
even though in the beginning, I think it was really hard for him not only learning this role, but also just the reality of being in America, it was during the Trump administration that this transition happened, and I'm like, just so much was going on. | 8:47 | speaker 1
He's from South Africa. | 9:04 | speaker 1
Like, it was just a lot. | 9:05 | speaker 1
I think where they were able to get the show eventually is a huge testament to all the work that that crew and that team has put in to really make it what it is today. | 9:06 | speaker 1
it was the only way that I've been watching the news last few years exactly. | 9:15 | speaker 2
I'm sure they're not the only one. | 9:20 | speaker 1
they were able to make this really hard time more light hearted that was in the news. | 9:23 | speaker 1
We also heard about Brittany Griner. | 9:31 | speaker 1
Her thank God they let her go. | 9:35 | speaker 2
Yeah. | 9:37 | speaker 2
How long was she detained? | 9:37 | speaker 1
Has it been a while? | 9:39 | speaker 2
It's been a while, but thank God it wasn't what they gave her. | 9:41 | speaker 2
Ten years. | 9:44 | speaker 2
Ten years yeah. | 9:45 | speaker 1
a basketball player who was working overseas. | 9:49 | speaker 1
I don't know. | 9:54 | speaker 1
Was she in Russia with her? | 9:55 | speaker 1
Yeah, she was. | 9:56 | speaker 2
she had, like it was like a vape pin or something like that. | 9:57 | speaker 2
She wanted to go through the airport. | 10:00 | speaker 1
She got detained, and they sentenced her to, like, ten years for her of eight, which is absolutely ridiculous. | 10:03 | speaker 1
the United States, they've been negotiating with Russia for her release for several. | 10:14 | speaker 1
Months now, and they just released her. | 10:20 | speaker 2
it was a trade for an arms dealer. | 10:22 | speaker 2
Right. | 10:25 | speaker 1
They had to do something. | 10:31 | speaker 2
They couldn't leave the woman in there. | 10:32 | speaker 2
Yeah. | 10:34 | speaker 2
So, I mean, there are actually a number of Americans being detained, and I think there's been, like, some, drama around, like, why her? | 10:34 | speaker 1
out of all the yeah, they got military people being detained and all this other stuff. | 10:44 | speaker 1
But I'm glad she back. | 10:50 | speaker 1
yeah, the fact that we have to trade an arms dealer, I think. | 10:54 | speaker 1
kind of for somebody with a vape pin or something. | 10:58 | speaker 2
How is that a one to one? | 11:00 | speaker 1
That's very peculiar to me. | 11:04 | speaker 1
I just think Russia is going through it right now. | 11:07 | speaker 2
Russia got some issues. | 11:10 | speaker 2
They got to work them out. | 11:12 | speaker 2
Aren't they still in a way? | 11:13 | speaker 1
They are, yes. | 11:14 | speaker 2
I mean, Russia come on now, let's see. | 11:17 | speaker 2
We better be careful. | 11:20 | speaker 1
Talk about Russia. | 11:21 | speaker 1
That's all I got to say. | 11:22 | speaker 1
Be listening. | 11:23 | speaker 1
But I also don't understand. | 11:24 | speaker 1
I think about war, I've spent a lot of time thinking about war, unusually, but I always wonder, like, you go to war with someone to take over their land, or at least that was the premise of this current war. | 11:26 | speaker 1
That's different. | 11:41 | speaker 2
what is going to be left of the land if you keep bombing it? | 11:42 | speaker 1
Do you have the money to rebuild the infrastructure? | 11:49 | speaker 1
Wait, I feel like the Russia Ukraine thing is like Russia thought they were going to bully Ukraine, but Ukraine like, we small, but we're going to give it all we got. | 11:54 | speaker 2
I can't believe it's still going on. | 12:04 | speaker 1
I'm being honest, I didn't think Ukraine was that big to still be fighting. | 12:05 | speaker 1
They made some scrappy. | 12:10 | speaker 2
They're not going down easy. | 12:15 | speaker 2
But I feel like that makes Russia. | 12:17 | speaker 2
Look well, so Russia, though it's large. | 12:19 | speaker 1
I mean, I think it doesn't have as strong up a military as one would think. | 12:23 | speaker 1
I don't know. | 12:32 | speaker 1
This is all very interesting to me, that this is still happening. | 12:33 | speaker 1
I think that's the biggest point. | 12:37 | speaker 1
It takes a lot of money and resources and people resources to be just having a war, and you still have to run your country at the same time. | 12:39 | speaker 1
That just seems so crazy to me. | 12:53 | speaker 1
I don't understand more, basically. | 12:58 | speaker 1
I get that, but are you saying you would have thought that we've been over by now, or they've been like, we bombed you, we won't. | 13:01 | speaker 2
Give us your land. | 13:08 | speaker 2
Well, I thought one of the sides will run out of money by now. | 13:10 | speaker 1
You would run out of soldiers by now. | 13:15 | speaker 1
Elon Musk said and he paid for the Internet. | 13:19 | speaker 2
Ukraine got it in it because of Elon. | 13:22 | speaker 2
And then who is still there? | 13:27 | speaker 1
They shipped off all the women and children. | 13:28 | speaker 1
Who's fighting? | 13:31 | speaker 1
That's what I'm saying. | 13:33 | speaker 1
What's the population size are we talking about here? | 13:33 | speaker 1
there's only so much land to bomb. | 13:37 | speaker 1
Are you all in the mountains, in the woods? | 13:42 | speaker 1
Trying to hold down territory? | 13:45 | speaker 1
what Ava is saying is she needs to play by play. | 13:50 | speaker 2
Can you guys give her a day long snapshot of how this is going? | 13:53 | speaker 2
Can you read me into this? | 13:57 | speaker 1
It just feels like somebody should give up by now. | 13:59 | speaker 1
Just give up your land, give up your home, go somewhere else. | 14:04 | speaker 2
It's too much. | 14:10 | speaker 1
It's too much. | 14:11 | speaker 1
Guys, I'm not going to war with you. | 14:13 | speaker 1
Just to be clear. | 14:16 | speaker 2
if somebody come and bomb you and you'll be like. | 14:17 | speaker 2
Y'All can have it. | 14:25 | speaker 1
I don't need it. | 14:26 | speaker 2
I am nobody's rider. | 14:27 | speaker 1
Just so we're all clear. | 14:29 | speaker 1
Like. | 14:31 | speaker 1
I'm on a plane. | 14:36 | speaker 2
I read it. | 14:37 | speaker 2
The war just started five minutes ago. | 14:38 | speaker 2
This is why I was like, yeah, I really wanted to be in the military. | 14:40 | speaker 1
I really did not sound like that was a good idea. | 14:45 | speaker 2
I really did. | 14:47 | speaker 1
And I realized it's about myself. | 14:48 | speaker 1
I was like, I start fighting nobody's war. | 14:51 | speaker 1
I cannot join the military because you have to fight. | 14:54 | speaker 1
I was just like, this is not good. | 14:58 | speaker 1
This is not a good life choice for me. | 15:01 | speaker 1
I'm glad you realized that before you made it there. | 15:05 | speaker 2
I feel like that was an important discovery. | 15:07 | speaker 2
That was an important discovery. | 15:09 | speaker 1
If anything breaks out, I'm going to the Caribbean. | 15:12 | speaker 1
I feel like that's too close for comfortable. | 15:18 | speaker 2
Somebody taking over the US. | 15:20 | speaker 2
You going to go to Caribbean? | 15:21 | speaker 2
Maybe that is too close and they're. | 15:23 | speaker 1
Going to be easy to be taken over. | 15:26 | speaker 2
They got the whole us. | 15:27 | speaker 2
Already. | 15:28 | speaker 1
where can I go to, like, a little island day just about peace. | 15:29 | speaker 1
And you're not worried about it? | 15:34 | speaker 1
Yeah, there's a couple of islands that always, like, get flooded. | 15:35 | speaker 2
They probably don't want those. | 15:37 | speaker 2
Maybe I need to go on the other side. | 15:39 | speaker 1
The Cape Verde pants and some other islands. | 15:41 | speaker 1
Okay, so we don't work on her escape route. | 15:45 | speaker 2
Yes, but in other news so you. | 15:47 | speaker 2
All know I'm out. | 15:51 | speaker 1
So we're all clear. | 15:53 | speaker 1
This was happening. | 15:56 | speaker 1
What else was happening? | 15:58 | speaker 1
The news that might be relevant to the people, that's all the news that I really am. | 16:00 | speaker 1
The georgia runoff. | 16:10 | speaker 2
Okay, so this is what I'm confused with. | 16:12 | speaker 2
Herschel Walker. | 16:17 | speaker 2
I'm sorry, but like, guys, come on now. | 16:18 | speaker 2
Is this Stacey? | 16:24 | speaker 1
Stacey and herschel. | 16:25 | speaker 1
Or did Stacey lose? | 16:27 | speaker 2
Stacy lost. | 16:28 | speaker 2
Stacy lost. | 16:29 | speaker 1
But Herschel was going to run off. | 16:29 | speaker 2
I believe he lost now. | 16:32 | speaker 2
Please say so you guys know I'll be telling all my business. | 16:33 | speaker 2
you guys get all my opinions, but I'm really confused by why people have voted for him. | 16:39 | speaker 2
Can I say that? | 16:46 | speaker 2
So the guy is a liar. | 16:50 | speaker 2
Fact. | 16:56 | speaker 1
He said a lot of untrue statements. | 16:56 | speaker 2
What happened in Georgia? | 17:02 | speaker 2
I try to be unbiased. | 17:06 | speaker 2
So could you guys tell me. | 17:08 | speaker 2
What happened? | 17:12 | speaker 1
What? | 17:14 | speaker 2
Like like, are just some qualities that I'm missing. | 17:14 | speaker 2
it's some states in this country that I think we need to put on the draft. | 17:17 | speaker 1
you're not going, but they can go. | 17:28 | speaker 2
Some Russia you can have that. | 17:31 | speaker 1
What state you putting out there? | 17:36 | speaker 2
Texas. | 17:38 | speaker 1
Texas. | 17:39 | speaker 1
Texas. | 17:39 | speaker 1
Yes, Texas. | 17:40 | speaker 1
Y'all can go wherever. | 17:42 | speaker 1
Texas. | 17:44 | speaker 2
Texas is so useless. | 17:45 | speaker 1
I feel like it's just parts of Texas that's useless. | 17:46 | speaker 2
Okay. | 17:49 | speaker 1
If we can keep Dallas and Houston and Austin. | 17:49 | speaker 1
Yeah, I'm with that. | 17:53 | speaker 2
All that stuff, all that. | 17:59 | speaker 1
You all can have it. | 18:01 | speaker 1
And then we move over to Georgia. | 18:02 | speaker 1
I would also put Georgia on this list. | 18:04 | speaker 1
Let us keep atlanta. | 18:07 | speaker 1
Specifically black america. | 18:09 | speaker 1
Let Black america keep Atlanta to Atlanta. | 18:11 | speaker 2
And white Americans in Atlanta, y'all can. | 18:15 | speaker 2
Go to what you say, like the surrounding neighborhoods. | 18:17 | speaker 1
Surrounding communities of Atlanta. | 18:23 | speaker 1
y'all can have oh, let me get Savannah, too. | 18:26 | speaker 1
Sorry. | 18:29 | speaker 1
you all can have the rest of Georgia. | 18:30 | speaker 1
All of it. | 18:33 | speaker 1
Y'all can have it. | 18:33 | speaker 1
last but certainly not least is Florida. | 18:35 | speaker 1
Florida. | 18:38 | speaker 1
Let me keep miami. | 18:40 | speaker 1
Personally, for me, she don't want the people she just wants to laugh. | 18:42 | speaker 2
Miami. | 18:48 | speaker 2
I don't want the people to okay. | 18:49 | speaker 2
Miami, Florida, let's just keep that whole thing, and then you all can have the whole rest. | 18:52 | speaker 1
Including Key West. | 18:57 | speaker 1
Take it. | 18:58 | speaker 1
Including Key West. | 18:59 | speaker 2
Take it. | 19:01 | speaker 1
These countries, because they are very confused. | 19:04 | speaker 1
They are super Southern, but they don't like Texas and Florida. | 19:10 | speaker 1
I feel like there's a missing value system. | 19:17 | speaker 2
To me, it's like the rest of the south, but, like, these areas aren't just, like, really jacked up. | 19:22 | speaker 1
Like, I don't know, because when I think about a Mississippi versus a Florida have you thinking that they own your side. | 19:30 | speaker 1
Yeah. | 19:39 | speaker 2
And then they not. | 19:39 | speaker 1
they really so you like at least with Mississippi, what you're getting. | 19:41 | speaker 2
Right, okay. | 19:44 | speaker 1
Right. | 19:45 | speaker 1
I'm like, I think the instances like Trayvon Martin, like the Boldness, that's a Florida thing. | 19:45 | speaker 1
Just to just do what you want to do. | 19:54 | speaker 1
Yeah. | 19:57 | speaker 2
I feel like in Mississippi, at least. | 19:58 | speaker 1
You can expect that they told you a prime. | 20:01 | speaker 2
At least we know that's what it is. | 20:05 | speaker 1
Yeah, but Florida will have you thinking they all friends and no, they just like the rest of us out. | 20:07 | speaker 1
I get that. | 20:15 | speaker 2
What cities would you guys get rid of? | 20:19 | speaker 2
Have you ever thought of this? | 20:22 | speaker 1
No, I have thought extensively. | 20:23 | speaker 1
Three states, texas and Florida the most. | 20:26 | speaker 1
But Georgia seems like their cousin. | 20:29 | speaker 1
Yeah. | 20:32 | speaker 2
I feel like just more recently come out like the whole COVID, the whole scenario with the COVID situation. | 20:32 | speaker 2
COVID didn't exist in the state of Texas or in Georgia. | 20:40 | speaker 1
Yes. | 20:46 | speaker 2
in the whole rest of the world. | 20:46 | speaker 1
In the whole rest of the world? | 20:49 | speaker 1
Not just the rest of the United States. | 20:51 | speaker 1
The world. | 20:53 | speaker 1
It existed. | 20:54 | speaker 1
Yeah. | 20:55 | speaker 2
That happened. | 20:56 | speaker 2
Florida and my issues with Florida and Texas are like this whole CRT stuff is, like, really getting traction in those states. | 20:57 | speaker 1
They're, like, trying to erase words like racism, and I'm just like, Lord, pray for us. | 21:08 | speaker 1
That's all. | 21:16 | speaker 1
I can see that. | 21:17 | speaker 2
I don't know what else is going on in the world, but those are a few things that we know that have happened in the last few months that are just a little cray. | 21:18 | speaker 1
This is just us testing out a new type of segment, and we might. | 21:30 | speaker 1
Include this going forward, but that might mean we have to watch some news. | 21:35 | speaker 2
Trevor Noah is leaving, so I'm going to miss my news. | 21:38 | speaker 2
we not going to have no news sources. | 21:40 | speaker 1
So we need some news sources. | 21:42 | speaker 1
whoever Trevor's Noah's replacement is going to be, you got a lot to live up to. | 21:45 | speaker 2
Because if you can't live up to it, sean is not going to be watching news. | 21:50 | speaker 2
We have going to have no news sources. | 21:54 | speaker 1
It's all reliant on the daily Joe. | 21:58 | speaker 1
Like, this is a heavy burden. | 22:01 | speaker 1
All right, y'all. | 22:04 | speaker 1
until next time, I'm your girlfriends Nicole. | 22:05 | speaker 1
And I'm Shana Dixon. | 22:08 | speaker 1
And we are black girl. | 22:08 | speaker 1
Fly. | 22:10 | speaker 1
